Byeongsanseowon is located at Byeongsan-ri, Pungcheon-myeon. It is a Confucian school where Seo-ae Ryu Seongryong and his son, Ryu Jin, are glorified. A Seowon is a private school established in the mid-Joseon era by scholars for academic researches and enshrining ancient sages. At the same time, a Seowon is an administrative body for the autonomy of a village. The foundation of Byeongsanseowon is Pungakseodang, which had been at Pungsan village, Andong province, since Goryeo Dynasty. The Pungakseodang, where encourages the scholars' academic devotion, was bestowed of land amounting to 800 Durak by King Gongmin when he was escaping from an uprising of Honggeonjeok. And then, during Joseon Dynasty, in 1572, Ryu Seongryong moved Pungakseodang to its current place. Then it was burnt during Imjinwaeran(1592) when it became a Seowon in Year 2, Gwanghaegun (1610), by the scholars, mainly Ryu Seongryong's pupils including Ubok Jeong Gyeongse, who began to offer rites at a private shrine, Jondeoksa, in commemoration of Ryu Seongryong's achievements and academic spirit. The Seowon was bestowed with the name board of 'Byeongsanseowon' from the government in 14, King Cheoljong (1863). It was one of the 47 Seowons that escaped from being abolished when Daewongun launched an effective campaign to abolish Seowons in 1868.
