The village is famous for being the home of the Joseon Dynasty's Confucian scholars, Sir Gyeomam Ryu Unryong and Sir Seo-ae Ryu Seongryong. The village is a one-clan village of the Pungsan Ryu family, where the family members have resided. The name 'Hahoe' came from the fact that the river flow of Nakdonggang surrounds the village. The village is famous for Byeolsin Gut Mask Dance and Hahoe Mask. The whole village is designated as Important Folk Material. The UNESCO listed Hahoe Village as a World Heritage Site with Yangdong Folk Village at the 34th World Heritage Committee held in Brasilia, Brazil in July 2010 (July 31, 2010) as the 10th World Heritage of Korea. In the resolution of the listing, UNESCO evaluated that the 'Korean Historic Village: Hahoe & Yangdong' clearly shows the social structure and original Confucian aristocrat culture with the harmony, the method of placement, and the traditional residence culture among the residence constructions, pavilions, shrines, and Confucian schools, all of which tradition compares favorably to be enlisted as World Heritage as the custom is preserved intact for a long time. The committee also highly appreciated that there were literary works, artworks, academic and cultural achievements by Joseon Dynasty's Confucian scholars. Intangible cultural heritage related to the life and belief of the people, including new year's traditions and traditional family events of coming-of-age ceremonies, marriage and funeral services, ancestral rites, etc., all of which had been handed down over generations.
